Nokia N900 SOME THOUGHTS and Vs netbook

he last 15 days with N900 has been the best days and the best trial ever that will definitely effect my buying decision after couple of months when N8 will be in the markets. The most exhilarating 15 days of my life. I’ll skip the specification part since N900 is already famous among us.

So let’s start with the Good side.
Very powerful OS. The flexibility and customization and Mod’s available for Maemo 5 are more than enough to describe this OS, unlike Symbian or any other.
One thing I would say for sure, if someone knows Linux or Python, he can literally re-create this device and can do wonders with the OS. And for those who are not acquainted with the programming languages can enjoy the powerful experience N900 has to offer.
The Screen Size 3.5’’ and the Display is next to HD. I’ve watched movies on it and have ENJOYED them! This is the mobile device to watch movies on.
32GB of space, more than enough until you want to install MAC OS X on it. And if it’s not enough you can plug another memory card as per your need.
A very comfortable three row keyboard. Although I didn’t anticipated that it’s going to be good, but it worked just fine.
Music playback and quality is fine considering the headset that is provided with it.
Camera Quality, 5 mega pixels works pretty decently in bright daylight but works equally average in the night. Video recording is decent as well. Although camera could have been better considering that it’s a 5 mega pixel.
The fact that there aren’t many applications for Maemo 5 but no matter how many there are they are all worth trying.
The Social networks integration is something to appreciate about. You have skype, facebook, google, msn, jabber etc.

The Bad side:
What good the device is if all the goodies I mentioned above one cannot enjoy in one go. The battery life is unexpectedly below average. Considering that it’s a 600 MHz processor and a 3.5’’ screen Nokia should have been smart enough to provide with at least a 1500 mAH battery.
The touch can be a little annoying if you’re not used to it.
For those people who aren’t big fan of heavy devices, they might be a little aloof towards it, BUT remember this device is worth the weight.

Can N900 replace my Net book?
Many people agree that YES N900 can replace a net book but I don’t. What people do is that they compare the potential of those two devices. Net book is made for giving you 24/7 connectivity and thus N900 ultimate browsing experience and social network integration is the best part about it.
No doubt the browsing experience is something that is worth but on a net book u can just do a little more then what u have been hearing about. E.g Adobe photoshop, it can run that, I’ve run that on Nokia Booklet 3G. Other software includes windows movie maker, and all sort of media converters. So the thing is the limit of those potential is the thing. N900 can play nearly any format but still, lacks to play certain flv content and blureay or mkv format. At times it gave me an error on MP4, I don’t understand that, may be because of the bitrate and stuff.
So, yes may in your bed while going to sleep, you might want to give a last tweet through your N900 and not go into the hassle of waiting till your net book’s desktop opens which will take ages.
Its no doubt the potential of N900 that gives arise to this question ‘Can N900 replace my net book’
Convenience is the issue, and not what it can do.
• Will it more Convenient to work on an excel spreadsheet on a net book with a 10.1” or a 3.5”.
• The Battery life 3 hours vs 10 hours.
• 32GB vs 120GB
• Maemo 5 vs Windows 7 Starter.

Ok N900 can fit in your pocket but a netbook can fit in your bag so not that big issue with the portability.
I would say it’s not wise to say that N900 can replace my net book but Its much wiser to say that N900 is Almighty in cellphone.

Show me a netbook that can last 24/7 - there are none! They currently range from 2 hours to 10 hours maximum before a charge is needed and that also depends on what you are doing with it, (surfing the internet, accessing WIFI, playing games etc). The same applies to the N900.

My personal feeling is that the N900 is better than a Netbook for the following reasons:

One has a phone function, your ISP data connection and you don't have to be in a WIFI zone to enjoy the internet, just within a Mobile tower.

For it's size compared to a standard sized netbook, for the N900 to run for 5 hours is remarkable considering most netbook batteries are much much larger and heavier and don't even last that long. I mention 5 hours because that is what I get with my N900 and I use it heavily. It's on all the time with the following applications and widgets open: Angry birds (game), Conversation widget, conversation with Skype, Gmail, Facebook, MSN, OVI chat all available instantly and in one place, Facebrick (Facebook), FB-Reader (E-book reader), Audio/Video player, Mozilla browser, Email, Calendar Widget, Witter (Twitter client), Notepad, Foreca Weather widget, Bluetooth online, wireless online, 3GS, application manager, Terminal, RSS feed showing a dozen or so website posts.

Netbooks are small, but the N900 is smaller with it's slide out keyboard and can easily fit in your pocket, and doesn't require a bag to carry it, so it's more convenient. I wouldn't have taken my netbook to Glastonbury recently, but happily took along the N900, with a rechargable battery back that was even smaller than the device itself.

Do Netbooks have 5MP camera/video cameras built into them with a camera on the front? NO, so the netbook is at a disadvantage already.

Skype is built into the phone and not an extra application to load or install.

Looking at the smaller things, can one use a netbook as an alarm clock, to sit next to your bed side table? (mmm, not very practical).

How useful is a netbook on your cars dashboard to be used for Satelite navigation? (not very practical), oops does a netbook even have a GPS built into it? (No), or what about carrying your netbook around town when using Google maps (again not very practical).

Once you have purchased your netbook, what are the extra costs for all the applications? (MS Office - not cheap!)
Maemo being open source means you have thousands of applications available to you via an easy to use application manager. With your netbook you need to go online and search for them all, download them and then install them. (Time consuming).

Then there are the virus / mailware factors to contend with on windows netbooks, more software needed on your netbook to protect yourself at what cost?

32GB versus 240GB - I have more than 60 full albums of music (MP3, FLAC, OCC, WAV), a dozen full length feature films in good HD quality, 5000+ photographs, not to mention all my files, ebooks, audio books, all in easy reach via multiple applications on the N900.

There are so many reasons why the N900 is better than a Netbook, laptop or PC or any other phone device / smartphone available today.

I’m really impressed with your writing skills mate, but your reading skills needs a brush up. Read my line again!! We all know What n900 is capable of, but COMPARE THE LIMITS of those POTENTIAL!!
All that you wrote, Everybody knows that already and it was in my head when N900 was just officialy announced.
You see I love my N900, its the best cellphone out there, I mean competing with a net book, DAMN it has some potential BUT!
When I have to make a 25 Pages report which requires Word, Excel maybe 2 – 3 days of internet researching, I’ll rather stick to my Net book.
When I need to Edit a photo and since I’m a professional, i would like to USE Adobe Photoshop and windows movie maker or another for any video.
I ENJOY Blueray movies and let’s just say there are no proper codecs for N900 to play mkv format.
I take your points about Navigation part but hey, is there GOOGLE MAPS for N900?
You say You got all that heavy Stuff in your N900, that’s good mate, Even me too. But multiply that by 5 and I got that much in my net book.
I’ve got this Nokia Booklet 3G and so far I’m comparing it to that.
Now tell me this, A student sitting in a class doing something on his N900 will look more professional to his teacher or doing something on a Netbook. I mean with N900 in class, his teacher might think he’s texting to his girlfriend until the teacher is EITHER You or ME who knows that there are other things aswell that can be done with an N900.
Tell me one more thing. Which one of the following is better.
1. I went to buy a laptop and considering it was out of my budget so I bought a net book.
2. I went to buy a Laptop and considering it was out of my budget so I bought an N900.
Lol 2nd is attractive but equally funny.
You said you need a battery pack for N900 and its even smaller then the device. So i’m asumming that u’re pockets are full since u keep a battery pack all the time with u. What kind of a cellphone needs a battery pack. I thnk u know it.
And dude u’re differentiating rather then comparing. I got bored by the end of ur comment.

Ill stick to my side, N900 is an ultimate Cellphone which has the potential to compete with a net book but cannot replace it.
P.S If you need an alarm clock by ur bedside then let me tell u that its an INSULT to n900.

Ha Ha! Fair points although calling the N900 a cellphone is the biggest insult.

Do you have an N900 and if so for how long have you had it?

Zohaib said...

And contact Nokia for the cellphone query. :)
